Why learn language the brain-based way?
Language is a learnt skill, that is, unlike in-born survival skills such as motor-sensory skills – touch, walk, run – and lower-cognitive skills such as simple analytical and logical reasoning – 'is this dangerous?', 'is this edible?' – that comes from experience, language is learned from practice or regular use. This means it takes a conscious, deliberate effort on our part to acquire the four literary skills of writing, reading, speaking and listening. With the understanding of the how the brain processes language, we can incorporate this knowledge into the processes of learning langauge to help us become better language users.

Do I need to acquire these skills when I am already proficient in language?
Brain-based language learning seeks to bring the unconscious competence of our language skills into conscious competence; effectively, knowing what we know and do not know will help us to address underlying issues or to attack root causes of poor language use, making us better language practitioners in the process.

As an example, scanning is a brain-based language skill, called forth when we want to browse through our newspapers in a relatively short time. When we are scanning, our brains are seeking patterns of recognition; if we are a banker, we would look for important financial stories and zoom in on news details that would affect our profession directly while ignoring the rest. This ability of scanning, recognizing and zooming in , effectively increases our domain knowledge, directly increasing our job competence while freeing us time as we ignore the rest of the headlines. The brain's storage is limited; as it seeks what is critical to its survival, it unconsciously sifts out the important from the trivial.

As we might already be scanning in our daily jobs already, ensuring that this becomes our conscious competence will enhance the use of it to make it faster, better and easier.

All this is well and good but how can i apply them directly in my work?
When we grow in our conscious competence in engaging our language skills, we simply become better language users. In short, we will now know that we know, and by implication, know what we do not know, helping us to refine our language skills even further as we seek enhanced competence. Reading, speaking, listening and writing can all be improved as a result.

It is like having a language coach inside us, guiding us in self-corrective actions into a expert language user. This has wide-ranging implications in helping us to become a better parent, teacher, colleague or lover as we seek to better communicate to our other half. How long do I need to put in the effort to practice brain-based language skills to see my language proficiency improving?

A conscious, deliberate and positive attitude goes a long way. These will pay off in rich dividends as you see your language competence grow day by day. You may stop at any time and pick it up again anytime you wish after meeting the specified target you have set for yourself. Remember that the brain is continuously learning; even when you are sleeping, your brain is consolidating your learning for the day. The more you expose your brain to novel, challenging and meaningful tasks, the more your competence grows.

In “Change your Brain in 30 Days”, the 30-day step program is designed specifically with the busy executive or time-starved language student in mind. It is choice-oriented so you can choose the different levels of training to meet your needs, methodological and process-oriented so you know exactly the rationale behind the training procedures and how it helps you and finally, it's result-oriented to ensure that you meet your specified target to motivate you to continue in your brain training journey.
